Do you have an ‘itis’ problem?

Without inflammation we would not be able to fight infections nor heal from injury. The process of inflammation involves the immune system directing chemicals and cells to heal damaged or infected tissue. These include specialised immune cells, prostaglandins, antibodies and various proteins needed to repair damage.

These are delivered via plasma to damaged tissue by making blood vessels more permeable. This extra fluid is what causes redness, swelling and often pain. The inflammatory response often creates more discomfort than the original problem. This is certainly true for arthritis.

If inflammation is in response to a problem it cannot repair this can cause a chronic inflammatory state. Most people who contact me have a problem that has an ‘itis' suffix. This just means it is inflammatory. Most days I speak to people who have had significant improvement in long-term inflammatory conditions often problems like arthritis, bursitis or tendonitis affecting joints.

When using natural therapy for osteoarthritis I always add high levels of the main anti-inflammatory Omega 3 fat eicosapentaenoic acid – known as EPA – to help balance dominant inflammatory Omega 6 oils in our diets. We combine this with curcumin from turmeric and an equal amount of chondroitin and glucosamine both of which have anti-inflammatory capacity. Most antioxidants also have anti-inflammatory function including resveratrol, grape seed extract and acai extracts.

I've been helping a man in his sixties in pain from lower spine arthritis. We introduced my standard anti-inflammatory food programme and put him on 1500mg of high grade chondroitin, with glucosamine and 200mg of 95 per cent curcumin. After three months most of the discomfort has gone. Give the body what it needs to reduce inflammation and you will notice the difference.
