Bay to benefit from Budget investments

This year's Budget investment in health, housing and infrastructure is something Bay of Plenty MP Todd Muller believes will further underpin a 'booming” Bay of Plenty.

Finance Minister Bill English announced his eighth budget yesterday and Todd says it's a budget which invest in a growing economy.

Bay of Plenty MP Todd Muller.

'Because National has very carefully managed the Crown's finances these past eight years, we're now in a position to deliver a Budget with big increases in spending in areas that matter for the Bay,” Todd says.

'New Zealand is one of the best performing economies in the world, outstripping most of the world's richest economies.”

He says more than 200,000 people have jobs than three years ago, with 170,000 more jobs expected over next few years.

'This creates a platform of performance from which we can spend wisely for real local benefit.”

As a region attracting hundreds of new people each year with skills and capability, Todd says the Bay is the best-placed region in the country to benefit from the $761.4 million investment over the next four years in science, skills, tertiary education and regional development initiatives.

'We have a proven track record with businesses like WNT ventures, so I'm hugely confident the Bay will get a deserved chunk of this exciting innovation investment.

'A growing economy provides us with choices, so I am delighted with the $2.2 billion extra spending in our health sector over next four years including more money for elective surgery,” says Todd.

'Our schools will benefit from both the targeted investment for school children at risk of not achieving regardless of decile, plus a further $883 million for new schools and classrooms, some of which I'm sure will flow to the Bay.”

Todd says the country is judged on how it treats the most vulnerable and this is a Budget focusing on making a real difference at the coal face.

'The $200 million to reform of services for vulnerable children and young people will be a legacy investment in my view, part of $652 million of social investment.

'This is a solid budget that builds on the progress we've made over the past eight years. A Budget I'm proud of.”

Bowel Cancer early detection

One of the less recognised announcements in this budget is the bowel cancer early detection program. Bowel cancer is a middle aged male killer, this insidious disease shows no early symptoms, the only way to find it is by screen tests and the Govt making screen testing free will save hundreds of male lives. Early detection screening programs are a cost effective life saver. Congratulations to the Govt for implementing this initiative.Max Lewis, Mt Maunganui

I am now over thirty years in NZ.and when I came here in my early forties, they promised the same thing and now the waiting list in the health sector is even longer then at that time, also we have more kids who go hungry to school. A good house was about three year wages ,now it is nine of average year wages. I don,t give a cent for all their promises.

Hmmmm

Tauranga..... Gods waiting room. Other than in aged care, retirement villages and kiwifruit orchards, just where is the investment in employment in Tauranga? Sure we are doing well attracting overseas students, but this has it's down-side in keeping wages low and meaningful employment hard to come by ("Ten dollar Tauranga" is alive and well whilst we have youth rates being paid) We have an influx of fixed income and migrant low income workers here, so it's no wonder than Mr Muller is talking about the big picture New Zealand wide rather than what is happening in his own backyard.

I'm generally a Nat supporter but Pammax takes the cake in my opinion?
