Police name killed motorcyclist

Police have released the name of the Tauranga man who was killed after a crash between a car and motorcycle at Okauia near Matamata on Saturday.

Motorcyclist Ivan Philip Stanbridge, 60, was killed after he collided with a car on Old Te Aroha Road, two-and-a-half kilometres from State Highway 24, at about 3.30pm.

Paramedics who attended the crash performed CPR on the motorcyclist but he died at the scene. Two people who were occupants in the car were left shaken but uninjured.

Speaking to Fairfax, Waikato Road Policing manager Inspector Freda Grace says Ivan, an 'experienced rider”, had been riding with a group of motorcyclists earlier in the day.

At the time of the crash he was riding alone and heading southward towards the Kaimai Ranges when he came over the brow of a hill, crossed the centre line and 'clipped the car”.

'Speed could have been a factor. He was just that little bit over the centre line, so it's maybe too fast, or a momentary lapse of concentration,” says Freda

'It is sad because he was doing everything right. All the gear he was wearing – he had a good helmet, pants and jacket and was an experienced rider.”

Freda adds it was unlikely the man suffered any medical event and road conditions were fine at the time.

Waikato's Serious Crash Unit is continuing its investigations into the cause of the crash.

....to family and friends of Mr Stanbridge, my understanding is that he was a fine man, safe rider, and will indeed be a loss to our community. I would like to know if Inspector Grace has made any other conclusions as to the cause of this tragic event. What interest me mainly are the thoughts of Mr Stanbridge "crossing the centre line"..as there are so few along that road as I recall. An experienced rider such as the age of Mr Stanbridge would not normally take unnecessary chances if not necessary, so I hope the correct conclusions are reached...we so often, if at all, have a decisive reason given as to why these accidents occur, so, how can we possibly learn from them when we don't know why they happened in the first place?. I guess we need to rely on accurate information from those involved... and still with us.

Quite right Groutby

I didnt know Mr Stanbridge but my sympathies go to his family and friends. I am a motorcycle rider and have always believed something beneficial could be gained from these tragic accidents, if only the conclusion of the cause of the accident could be made available to the motorcycling public. We could then build a picture in our own minds where and in what circumstances we are most at risk.
