Highway cleared after truck jackknifes

Tauranga Police report lanes blocked when a truck and trailer jackknifed on State Highway are now clear.

The truck and trailer unit got into trouble near the summit on the Waikato side of the Kaimai Range earlier today, leaving the trailer unit across two lanes.

It has since been cleared from the scene.

Speed and complacency are factors in road incidents. Note I use the word 'incident'. When one (usually speed) or more rules of the road are neglected then there will be an incident.

Like all road users truckies can be good and bad, however the worst driving by a couple of truckies was in wet weather when the speed limit on Waikato side was 60 and Tauranga side 60. At least three truckies could not read the limit and took everything on in the fast lane. Only one truckie was good and in fact stopped for his rest time. Perhaps time a central tracking GPS needed for all trucks, not just their bosses, sorry good drivers,so enforcement agencies can track them and ping them. Note since change of logging truck loads less road accidents with them.

All of the facts are known, no one should 'blame the truckie'... I have had incidents where idiot motorists have cut in front of me and jammed on the brakes... had I run up their bum, I would have looked like an 'idiot truckie'... all I was trying to do was not squash the fool into the tarmac. Car drivers should realise that trucks cant stop as quick as the car, especially in the wet... and when a truck has to take emergency action to avoid a fool motorist, the truck driver basically becomes a passenger in a 50 tonne torpedo. Yes, there are some ignorant truckies, but there are zillions more ignorant car drivers. Next time you are driving, watch what motorists do around trucks, getting in the braking zone, too close behind on hill starts... zip around here and there... very risky behaviour. Glad truckie is ok

You mention since the change of logging truck loads that there are less accidents with them. Can you please explain what you are talking about? Next time you go over the Kaimais when you are on the Waikato side check out all the many holes thru the fence which is from all the bad car drivers plowing thru it when they miss the corner....
