Your thoughts on CCTV cameras

A new CCTV camera installed on the corner of McLean Street and The Strand sparked quite a bit of debate online.

Some people believe the camera is an invasion of privacy and others feel it's a good thing to have to help prevent criminal activity.

The camera was installed in an effort to curb the rising number of public disorder incidents and liquor ban breaches.

Transport Operations Centre senior traffic systems engineer Richard Eaton says up until the installation of the camera last week, coverage in the area had been poor. Read more here.

SunLive wanted to see what people on the streets thought about the CCTV cameras and whether or not they did deter people from committing crimes.

Can only be a good thing...

if you are not doing anything wrong, what do you have to fear?, as for the lame protest from those who have privacy issues, what a joke!, there are no secrets in cyber space, if you like smashing bottles on the Strand or pulling up street signs, and being an idiot, thats cool!, do it where others do not have to clean up after you.

Good

I think it is a good thing! People should not mind if they are behaving!

More cameras

less crime, surely they can only be a deterrent. No issues with 'invasion of privacy', I'm not likely to be filmed doing something wrong.

only the low life will complain, lets get more then we will all feel a lot safer.

You are in public anyway (not private). If you are not doing anything wrong, nothing to worry about. It's a pity it has to be done, still the good guys end up paying to deter the 'few idiots'. Please follow vandals up, make them clean up and fine them - this might help cover the costs. No money - do community service. :)

No problem with it

...the actions you describe are NOT cool, no matter where you do them or whether there are cameras or not. Like you, I respect the right of people to make their own choices but we need to address why anti-social choices are being made in the first place. The cameras are a sad necessity, but I favour their deployment.

I think you have put your finger on it. The cameras will enable the Police to find offenders (especially regular ones) and they should be made to do clean-up and other positive actions for the community.

If you have nothing to hide, then what is the problem?

Sick and tired of not being able to walk around my city because of drop kicks, although I don't agree with our privacy going I have reached the stage where I'd rather have them and be safe and my kids be safe.

If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear...Change the record. I have nothing top hide and don't like being watched...Oh and by the way I have every right to not want to be on camera every time I go down town. If the cops didn't have to spend so much time in peopel's Homes sorting out Domestic problems they could be on the streets catching theses people doing the damage. Again I have nothing to hide and you have no right to watch me doing nothing. Your reasoning is not sound and smells like something another Guy tried in Germany a few decades ago.

Double post gets the point across but we are 2016 and there are more and more pics being taken everyday. Better not travel overseas as your mugshot will be taken everywhere like it or not. Bring on the cameras for a safer city.

Bring it on

Definitely! More cameras required! If you have nothing to hide why worry? Tough luck you knockers, CCTV cameras make our streets safer!

The answer is simple. Dont go out in public where people can watch you with their eyes. People who do understand that using common sence that anyone and everyone is always watching. Clearly you do have something to hide. Your a minority so get over it and get used to it or dont go out. Stop moaning. Cameras are good and here to stay.

"Clearly I have something to hide".... Speculation or is there something you know that I dont?

Interesting

The debate about cameras is always the same. Dazed and Confused, you flaw your own argument. A police officer stood watching you, or a camera operator who has a bank of cameras who will only pay attention if you're doing something wrong, or look back over a recording if there was a problem in the area. Which would you prefer? You can't be in a "public" place and expect "privacy". Cameras are everywhere, shops, banks, ATM's, taxi's, in average Joe's car windscreen and almost everyones pockets with smartphones. If you're not being seen by cameras, sure enough there's a thousand other eyes on you. Cameras are good, they are non-invasive and have no impact other than identifying criminals. Try living somewhere where there's police/military on every street corner such as Syria, suspicious of your every move. You'll be glad of the cameras, believe me.

Sounds like you should stay at home and pull your curtains and hide. Funny enough i bet you have a phone with a camera on it lol. If you dont like being watched then DONT GO OUT IN PUBLIC.

Cameras

YES to Cameras. If you have nothing to hide, then why worry. I agree. However, put the crime busters to work, make them clean the streets, the graffitti, put them in the ole fashion stocks, let the public throw rotten food at them. Humiliate them, so they won't act irresponsible again,. But also, put cameras at all the traffic light intersections, & round abouts. Use them to catch the stupid RED light runners, & arrogant Cell phone users while driving. I'm all for Cameras, for everything. I've got nothing to hide, & if you are that concerned about your privacy, then get rid of that cell phone, & don't bother stepping outside each day.

To Camera or not to camera

Posted on 18-07-2016 12:21 | By flyingtoaster

My concern is my privacy whilst on my own property. There are more and more cameras around these day, and they don't invade my privacy YET. More cameras breed more cameras, eventually my privacy in my own home or on my own property will be invaded. So more cameras?? my response is both yes and no.

Good thing

I don't have a problem with it, I think it could be very useful and there should be more of them to be honest.
