Arson is being put down as the suspected cause of a fire which destroyed a car in Tauranga.

Firefighters were called to the blaze on Kairua Road just before 8.30pm to find nothing but what can only be described a 'fire ball” on the side of the road.

A Northern Fire Communications spokesperson says firefighters put the fire out quickly, but the vehicle was completely destroyed.

No one was found with the vehicle at the time of the fire.

Investigations are underway into the cause of the blaze.
