Vehicle loses control on TEL

Heavy rain and speed are the likely factors which caused a four vehicle crash on the Tauranga Eastern Link.

Police and other emergency services were called to the crash on State Highway 2, just before 6pm, after a vehicle lost control.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the vehicle struck the centre wire rope barrier and was then redirected onto the correct side of the road.

'The first vehicle has then collided with another vehicle travelling in the same direction. A further two vehicles have then collided with the first vehicle that lost control.

'One driver was taken to Tauranga Hospital with a sore back, and another was taken for observation.”

At the time of the crash, Ian says rain was extremely heavy, visibility was poor and it was very dark as a result of the conditions.

'Initial indications are that the vehicle was travelling too fast for the conditions, and that's so true of a lot of the crashes we get during inclement weather.

'I keep saying it, but when weather conditions are poor people just need to slow down. Concentrate on what you're doing, respect following distances and drive to get to your destination.”

Ian says there was also a historic crash around 12pm on Matapihi Road, where a car crashed into a power pole. Police are investigating the crash and no other information is available at this stage.

'There are also some slips on Welcome Bay Road, my advice is for drivers to take extreme care.”

State Highway 2, between Paengaroa and Matata, remains closed this morning due to a large slip and Pongakawa Bush Road is still closed after being washed out in flash flooding last week.
