Don’t drink and drive-thru

A quick trip through a fast food drive-through has landed one drink driver in hot water with the law after hitting the back of a police vehicle.

Instead of a side order of fries, the woman driver thought it would be better to abuse the off-duty officer instead.

The incident was posted on the Waikato Road Policing Team Facebook page yesterday and tells how a Hamilton Police dog handler had called into a 'well known” food chain after a long day to grab a 'kai”.

But while making his way through the drive-through, the 'bright spark” rear-ended him.

The driver in the car behind not only banged her car into the patrol car, she then got out and started abusing the officer.

He called for back-up. The road policing team 'get wind” of the incident and head down to investigate the incident and smelt alcohol on the woman's breath.

The woman was breath-tested and had a result of 763 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath, nearly three times over the limit.

The Facebook post so far has 260 likes, and plenty of funny comments.

"One lettuce leaf short in the hamburger," one person wrote.

"Obviously the idiot doesn't realise that July is known as dry July lol," says another.

Police says there is no damage to the patrol car.

"Not the brightest move on her part! No damage to the patrol car thanks to a rather sturdy tow bar... Drive sober people!"

as the "offender" was probably restricted for space and somewhat in a "tight corner"..was it necessary to call for "back up"?..deal with it guys please you are POLICE...use other patrols to do something useful .. guess there was a hungry dog in the police vehicle, well there ya go...job done! Not funny really to think that people think they have the right to act in this way even if it was not a patrol car involved. Joke over Police...PLEASE get serious here!!

What could happen

My guess is that the offender will be fined but possibly never pay it. Once you accumulate enough fines a nice judge will let you off, no problemo. Then somewhere down the track the police will think it's a good idea to lower the alcohol limit again.

It says the officer was off-duty. And funny stories stick in the mind and get passed on, which is why we are reading this story in the BOP. I think its a clever communication strategy by the police.
