What kind of low life does that to an 85 year old man. Shame of them. Jail them and throw away the key.

What the hell is wrong with people, that they feel the need to stab an 85yr old?? Time to bring back punishment that actually deters these people.

Sport??

Posted on 12-08-2016 12:01 | By davidt5

Are armed robberies to become the new sport in Tauranga city? They are now occurring so often that it is clear that the Judiciary will need to get in a supply of heavier duty wet stamps with which they intend to clobber the offenders. Please let the sentences reflect the seriousness of these abhorrent crimes. In each case the victim is the person who suffers the most. The criminal will have forgotten these disgusting crimes within days, but the victims will be left suffering mentally and emotionally for years to come.

Keep them locked up

Posted on 12-08-2016 12:05 | By The Sage

This will have done irreparable damage both physically and emotionally to an 85 year old man. Name and shame them. Their actions are unforgivable. Hope, if they live to 85 (and that would be highly unlikely) that something similar happens to them.

Scum

what can one comment about this incident?? No doubt they'll get community service or something equally futile. These 'types' ,as I am loathe to call them humans, need toput on an island or remote property and be left to themselves OR better NO WINZ benefits for at least 5 or 10 years.

The absolute scum of society. Such brave low lifes to pick on a senior citizen. Years of community service might be an appropriate sentence.

Hopeing the elderly gentleman is ok. be scared for the rest of his life but these scum will forget about it tomorrow. harsher penalties are required and not just a week behind bars.

Hmmmm

Posted on 12-08-2016 12:22 | By How about this view!

Maybe we can warm-up another couple of beds in her majestys hotels? But probably not. Undoubtedly they would have had a poor childhood, been abused or some other hard-luck story that drives us all into a life of crime. Unfortunately our prisons, with a warm bed, showers, a T.V. and three meals a day are too good for these lowlife scum. Maybe we could enlist the assistance of our returning armed forces to establish a military run prison with hard labour and military discipline.

get real

I might have to arm myself if it continues i would hate to be helpless in a situation where i needed to defend my family.

Throw away the key!

No doubt these scumbags will get Legal Aid and some smart lawyer will get them a piddling sentence because they come from a dysfunctional family, deprived background etc etc!! Usual story. It is not printable what I would like to say about, and do to these sub-human' creatures'! Community Service? No thanks!! They are not fit to be loose in the community!

NZ prison seems too good for these ones, Maybe the Aussies could accommodate them in an offshore detention centre?

It is all about the deterrent. There is none and this disgusting behaviour is unlikely to decrease until politicians WAKE UP!

This has to stop and these Judges need to start getting hard on these mongrels. Who could do this to an old person . They have no morals like a lot of the young today

Appalling

I like the idea of locking them in stocks in the middle of Greerton. Perhaps it really is time to name and shame and make these young people at least feel................something.

Yeah and so did I but I don't rob and stab my elders. Community Service I suppose or home detention - what a joke! Thinking Aussies have more sense than us and pretty much have it right.

I'm mad

I know the victim. He has been my parents neighbour for 40 years. He is one of the gentlest, most pleasant people you could ever hope to live in your neighbourhood. He also lost his wife recently to illness. This will ruin his confidence. He did not deserve this. No body would. I hope these maggot rot in hell. I shall be hoping they develope cancer.

Reality

I sense a lesser charge looming to secure a quick cheap result in court, if we are lucky! Wet bus tickets for two. Repeat. Broken society, broken justice system.

Harsh penalties not the only answer...

Posted on 13-08-2016 08:33 | By The Commentor

I think the key issue here that gets ignored by the media (probably for fear of retaliation), is the complete lack of Policing for minor crime. What happens is these criminals start small, and then get progressively bold as they discover there is zero policing for crime until such stage as a weapon or the media become involved. In many cases it's actually worse than no Policing because of the smoke and mirrors faade that makes people think that the Police actually do something. One resulting problem is when property and or offenders are located they get reported to Police only to have no action taken when if at least the owner knew something could be done. It's time to stop believing the taxpayer funded whitewash and demand real policing.

It could be time that

Posted on 14-08-2016 10:26 | By astex

we take on board what has been done in parts of the U.S. to help protect the more vulnerable in our society. Any crime against the elderly or the very young means a doubling of the normal sentence with no parole period.

Obviously these witches were approaching other people, probably giving them some sob story about not having bus fare and needing a lift (no doubt a baby or pregnancy was mentioned somewhere to really tug the ol' heartstrings) and this kind-hearted gent got taken in. I have noticed some really dodgy folk in G'town lately, especially around the Bobby's/Westpac end. There were some foul-mouthed yobs of kids hooning up and down on their bikes on the footpath in the holidays. I'm sure they weren't there for the new library!

Heartbreaking.

Have we come to this now? These evil women need to be removed from society for a very long time. (Actually, if it were down to me, I'd have them removed permanently... Crimes against children and the elderly should incur capital punishment, the message being that "the strong shall NOT prey on the weak with impunity" and anyone who thinks it is OK gets removed from the gene pool.

Send them to the army

Posted on 21-08-2016 16:57 | By Cydifor

When are they going to be named and shamed? Then after they have done some jail time, send them to the army - Waiouru in winter, perhaps they could do the Tongariro Crossing - in bare feet!

@Cydifor

Posted on 22-08-2016 15:19 | By morepork

As one of the last NZ conscripts, I was in Waiouru in Winter. (there was a rail strike so we had no central heating (coal came in by rail), but we survived it. Often we see people suggesting that a spell in the Army would solve a lot of street crime. but that isn't what the military is for. The only effective discipline is SELF discipline and that comes from parents, families, schools, and communities who help their kids to develop it; it cannot be imposed by any outside authority and the military's role is NOT to punish people into flying right. Although I was shocked at having to do it at the time, I don't regret any time spent in the Army and it was a positive experience. That doesn't mean it is a panacea for "sorting out" social problems.

Castle Doctrine is what we need..

Posted on 31-08-2016 15:42 | By kiwigrunt

The right to defend home and any other property owned with any force we deem necessary, without fear of conviction, including the use of lethal force. But the gummint wont go for it, they need more people in more jails working their dairy farms for 40c an hour and justifying their increasing Big Brother approach to their own countrymen.
