Fire ravages Bay buildings

Smoke and flames could be seen billowing into the sky as fire tore through a Bay of Plenty home.

The Whakatane, Ohope and Edgecumbe Fire Brigades were called to a fire at the single storey dwelling in Whakatane on Saturday.

'It was already well involved when the first appliance arrived,” says a post in the Ohope Volunteer Fire Brigade Facebook.

Black smoke billowed through the town while fire crews got the blaze under control.

Residents reported abandoned trucks, cars and a bobcat were among the wrecks scorched in the fire on Wairaka Rd.

This was the second fire in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, with a house fire in Ohope.

Northern Fire Communications centre shift manager Jaron Phillips says everyone was out of the house but one person needed an ambulance after suffering burnt hands.

There were also concerns for a baby who was reportedly in the house at the time, says Jaron.

Fire crews in breathing gear dealt to the blaze with high pressure hoses and worked to stop the fire spreading to neighbouring homes.

A fire safety investigator also attended, and would return this morning to pinpoint the cause of the blaze.
