Town centre pulls down stone wall

No sooner the wall went up and the wall came down again.

The stone wall is at a busy Bethlehem Town Centre intersection right outside Eves.

Contractors pulling down the stone wall at the Bethlehem Town Centre.

A couple of weeks ago George Phillips told SunLive that the wall was dangerous in that it totally blocked views of traffic approaching from the right.

'Hello - pretty basic stuff I would have thought,” says George at the time. Town Centre management agreed.

And true to their word, the stone wall came down this week.

But the stone wall was just part of the problem. There has been a public outcry about the reconfiguration of the Town Centre carpark.

'Terrible”, 'stupid”, 'dangerous” and 'crazy” is how some SunLive readers described the new design.

Other regulars were even boycotting Bethlehem since they introduced the new traffic flow and six entrances but just two exits.

Town centre management indicated it too was disappointed and concerned and had pulled in a traffic engineer to examine the problem. It's expected to make changes before Christmas.

In the meantime the wall that was a wall is no longer a wall.

Configuration of whole carpark is dangerous

Changes need to be started immediately, not leave it till just before Christmas. The whole entry/exit thing is dangerous and ill thought through. I, like many I know, won't go there anymore.

A Desk Jockey Who Does Not MOve Out of The Office

A person who sits in an office is quite often the designer of these things. I believe only a few people would have been involved with the decision and no talking to their clients or regulars who use the area. The area was once easy to get in and out of and since the upgrade has become a hazard.

Did the person who designed this carpark etc sit in an office and push a pen round on the paper and drink coffee rather than get out in the real world and see how the design may work. what a waste of money.

The disability parks right beside

the exit roundabout in front of Kmart is one of the most dangerous issues of the traffic problems at Bethlehem. It is so difficult for a vehicle with disabled passengers to reverse with lines of traffic backed up at the roundabout, and often passengers are on tight timelines with caregivers, on their only "social contact" time that week.

It's all about K-Mart

Rumour has it the the flow of the traffic has been engineered to push the cars past K-Mart. They should have made a courtyard out front so the men can wait while the women shop.

I believe

The exit was done so the traffic would pass KMart at there request or conditions to enter the Centre. That is how this was such a muck up.

Great the wall has gone.

I saw them taking the wall down this morning. Fantastic Stuff. At least it's a step in making things better.

Safety

Surely there must be a safety issue to only having two exits in a huge place like Bethlehem? If one gets blocked, and it wouldn't take much to have a prang doing a right turn into the main road, then there's only one exit left. Perhaps K-mart management can come out and direct traffic...
