Parade in honour of Tauranga Olympians

Tauranga's five Olympic stars will be welcomed home with a rousing parade through the CBD next week.

The Tauranga Olympians Parade will celebrate the achievements of sailors Peter Burling, Molly and Sam Meech, Jason Saunders, and canoeist Luuka Jones on Friday, September 2, from 11am.

The parade will make its way down Devonport Road and onto The Strand where it will end at Wharf Street. Following the parade, a short ceremony will take place at Edgewater Fan with a chance to hear from the athletes themselves and Tauranga Mayor Stuart Crosby.

'This year's Olympic Games have been notable for Bay of Plenty Olympians, with half of all New Zealand Olympic medals belonging to a Tauranga-born or raised athlete,” says a Tauranga City Council spokesperson.

And of the medals won by Tauranga Olympians, three were in sailing with Peter and teammate Blair Tuke winning gold in the Men's 49er class, Molly and her teammate Alex Maloney winning silver in the Women's 49er FX class, and Sam Meech winning bronze in the Men's Laser class.

While canoeist Luuka Jones won silver in the Slalom Canoe and fellow Tauranga sailor Jason Saunders placed fourth in the Nacra 17 class.

Council says more athletes may be included in the parade, depending on their availability, over the next week.

'If you are coming into town for the Olympians Parade, please be prepared for large crowds and consider using public transport to avoid traffic and parking congestion.”

In the event of wet weather, the celebrations will be held at Baycourt Exhibition Space.

Would be great if Gemma Jones could also attend. I understand NZ was the only crew at Rio in which the woman helmed.
