Plans to light up Redwoods

The Redwoods Treewalk in Rotorua aims to highlight nature by night, with plans to open a Night Walk by January 2017.

The walk will be aided by nightlights hung in nearby trees lighting up the natural settings, says Treewalk founder Alex Schmid.

'It's not brightening up the forest, but illuminating parts of it. There's no disturbance for the wildlife in our efforts.”

Exploring nature while leaving it untouched has been the walk's aim since its inception as an idea Alex had when visiting the Whakarewarewa Forest in 2009 as a German tourist.

Settling in Rotorua to work on the project, he finally opened the Treewalk on December 19 last year.

The 553 m long walkway has seen 40,000 visitors so far taking to its 12 m high suspension bridges strung out between the Redwood trees.

'If you're scared of heights, it's a bit of a challenge,” says Alex.

'Most of our customers who go on the walk and step out of their comfort zone are glad they stepped out.”

The walkway has a weight limit of 120kg and has a maximum of eight people on at one time.

The youngest person to walk it has been 18-months-old, while the oldest was 96.

When will the trees sleep with all these lights on. I remember when the lights were removed from the Pilot Bay Norfolk Pines so the trees could sleep.
