Funding to learn Japanese in schools

Students at four Bay of Plenty schools will have the chance to learn Japanese in a nationwide programme to enable Kiwi students to learn Asian languages.

Te Puke High School, Te Puke Intermediate, Fairhaven School and Paengaroa School have been given $171,290 as part of the Government's Asian Language Learning in Schools fund.

Te Puke High School students will have the chance to learn Japanese in a nationwide programme to enable Kiwi students to learn Asian languages.

They are among 203 New Zealand schools to receive funding after the Government set aside $10 million in 2014 to increase Mandarin, Japanese and Korean language programmes in schools.

Rotorua MP Todd McClay says it's important the next generation is able to communicate and work in different languages as international and trading links grow.

'We are a trading nation, so it's important our future workforce has the opportunity to learn other languages and understand other cultures.

'It's great that schools are coming together to share resources and link with community and cultural organisations to make the most of these learning opportunities for their students,” says Todd.

The Japanese language programmes will start at the beginning of the 2017 school year.

So what are we going to spend even less time on in the classrooms? Do we replace one language with another? Most of our youth are failing in the ability to communicate in the English language, so let's reduce even further the time spent learning "the three R's" and spend more time learning Te Reo from around the Globe. Even though the VAST majority of business is carried out in English. There is far too much political correctness and "niceness" in our schools and too little relevant LEARNING going on. We need students that can gain employment when they leave SCHOOL and they shouldn't need to go on to Polytech or University to understand the basics of Maths and grammar, they should go there to advance the skills that they already have. Our schools are failing and here's another example of why they're failing!
