Owners keep pup mauling dog from council

The pit bull cross blamed for savaging a seal pup on Pukehina Beach at the weekend is yet to be seized.

Animal service officers have been trying to seize the dog but they say they are being frustrated by the owners.

The Western Bay of Plenty District Council is seeking the dog which is accused of killing a seal pup at the weekend. Supplied photo.

'They aren't co-operating,” says Western Bay of Plenty District Council compliance and regulatory manager Alison Curtis.

The dog is a male, pit bull terrier-type cross, tan coloured and it has been classified as ‘menacing'. It's not registered.

'The animal service officers have attempted more than once to seize the dog but the owners aren't helping.”

The dog is blamed for the death of a healthy young male seal on Pukehina Beach.

A holidaymaker at Pukehina witnessed the attack, says the dog grabbed the seal by the head and was tossing it round like a rag doll.

The seal later died on the beach.

Later the holidaymaker met up with the owner of the dog.

'He grabbed the dog and started beating it, put the boot in.”

'We are working with DOC and the Police and hope to seize the dog shortly,” says Alison Curtis.

No charges have been laid yet.

Have them arrested!

Rehome the dog ...

Posted on 15-09-2016 08:45 | By Seriously?

and seize the owners. Is retraining/rehabilitating and rehoming the dog an option at all? It is wrong to put this dog to sleep and make it pay the price with its life for the ineptness of the owners. Clearly these owners are trouble and the dog is a victim of its unfortunate environment. Please don't make the dog the "fall guy". This dog could do so well with an owner that will care for it properly.

Softly softly does not work!!

Well seize the owners then until they agree to give up the dog. And then whilst waiting for the owners to hand the dog over, take them to court to fine them for the incident and to fine them for not handing their dog over. Arrogant owners who need putting in their place.

Power.

Surely animal control have the power to seize a dangerous dog & if the owners wont surrender it then why dont the police go with them to get it as they do when a tenant has been evicted but wont leave, also to charge them with non compliance. What if this attack had been on a human, who ended up in hospital or worse. As for the dog being re-homed,this is not an option,as it has been proven with these breeds that it is in their blood, even if you have had it right from a pup, treated it well etc they will turn at some stage, even on their owners. Charge the owners & put the dog down.

Hmmmm

Posted on 15-09-2016 13:17 | By How about this view!

There is a suggestion that these losers are not afraid to use threats of violence towards others. That being the case, I personally, would have no problem with the police becoming involved and these owners being arrested for obstruction and endangering the public (Possibly?). I don't doubt for one moment that the offending MUTT has been rehoused amongst the family group and will be unavailable by the time all of the hoops have been jumped through by our community workers. Some animals don't deserve pets!

Mongrels own dogs

Such a pity that we have to share our oxygen with maggots like these. Its a vicious dog owned by irresponsible people. Kill the dog, charge the owners. Simple.

Call in the Police

And arrest both of them, they are obstructing the cause of justice.

Arrest the owners

For obstructing justice.Sadly the dog now has had the fun of the kill and the taste of blood, so put to sleep might be the only option would want it to add a child to the list.

Hopefully....

It wont be just Karma that bites the owners. Dogs don't forget who has kicked them... ever! Maybe when the dog has had enough... it might be the owner or the owners children or family that the dog turns on? Lets hope it is not another innocent being that gets mauled next time..... In the meantime, I think a psychiatric examination of the owners might be in order... find out what planet they are from?

Why do people always assume because a dog has mauled an animal that it will do the same to a child? Plenty of dogs have high prey drive but wouldn't touch a human. Shame the useless owners will get off Scott free but the dog which is obviously lacking in any proper training and lack of containment due to no fault of its own, is going to pay the highest price.

Would you risk one of your kids with a dog like this? I doubt it...

Should not own a dog

they were witnessed putting the boot into their dog, so should be arrested themselves for animal cruelty.

How sad that this dog will almost certainly be put down. Its a real shame. Its the fault of the damn irresponsible owners. There is no punishment that will make things right.
