Youths charged in failed armed robbery

Police have charged a 13-year-old and a 14-year-old after an attempted armed robbery of a city centre dairy.

The teenagers were apprehended by members of the public when they were allegedly spotted leaving AJs Lotto on Devonport Road on Thursday afternoon.

Two teenagers were arrested following an attempted armed robbery in the Tauranga CBD on Thursday afternoon.

A police spokesperson says two offenders threatened the shop owner with weapons and were captured by two members of the public after they fled the Devonport Road store at about 1pm.

'Police arrived on the scene to find the offenders being restrained on the ground.”

One of the people restraining the youths was stabbed and was taken to Tauranga Hospital for treatment.

'We understand it was one of the good Samaritans who received minor injuries. They have a minor stab wound and were in hospital receiving treatment.”

After taking to the two apprehended youths to Tauranga Police Station for questioning, police have since charged them with assault with intent to rob and aggravated wounding.

Both youths will appear in the Tauranga Youth Court this morning. 'Police are grateful for the assistance from the public in detaining these youths immediately after the incident.”

Another parenting success story!

It is about time we started holding the parents of these baby thugs accountable! Before anyone says "oh but we can't be watching them 24/7" YES YOU CAN (if that is what they need and deserve!) These two brats are BABIES! and yet we allow them to run around with sharp things... Idiocy, total lack of parenting!

So are the people who produced them. When will the justice system learn that finger wagging and chats are useless? Act like feral dogs, treat like feral dogs.

Do you have teenagers? I think you need to pull your head in a little. My 14yr old has a "degree" of autonomy that is a little out of my control. Watching him/her 24/7 is just a little unrealistic, don't you think? I do need to earn a living to house/feed/educate said child, and I don't consider that a lack of parenting.

greerton cynic. this is the direct result of the no smacking no disipline law. a lot of teenagers of today have no respect for anyone or anything not even themselves

Posted on 01-10-2016 10:44 | By How about this view!

Having read one or two other comments, I partially agree with some and disagree with a lot of the comments. There is currently a move to treat all crime by people upto age 17 in the youth court only. I would like to see the parent/s sentenced to complete at least some time in periodic detention, picking up litter and cleaning up in their own neighbourhood and see if their parenting skills change at all in terms of being responsible for their spawns actions.

Also a result of hard times, nothing in the house to eat, parents on minimum wage, which only just covers the rent, nothing left for power, food etc etc ...

"all crime by people upto age 17 in the youth court" - Wrong. Do some research before posting. And maildrop, My parents were upstanding Upper Middle Class, and yet I was a right toe-rag in my teenage years (and yes, that was in the days of corporal punishment, dumbkof2). Condemning parents for actions of their offspring is a slippery slope.

At 17 they know they are doing wrong

I have grandchildren aged 14 and 16 and for years they have known the difference between right and wrong. A 17 year old should be treated as an adult and sent straight to grown-up court to receive a grown-up sentence. One of mine, a long time ago, was a toe-rag for a while and I asked the police for help to sort him out. They were great and he now has children of his own and is a model citizen. Make these kids take responsibility for their crimes and face the penalty they know they are due.
