Traffic blocked by fire

Traffic is being turned back at Tara Road/Parton Road.

UPDATED: 345pm.The Te Puke highway between Welcome Bay Road and Bell Road is expected to remain closed until about 4pm says Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion.

The vehicle involved in the earlier crash on Parton Road has been cleared and Te Puke Highway traffic will be diverted through Papamoa.

A car crashed into a power pole and lines were down. One person has been taken to Tauranga Hopsital but the severitry of their injury is not known.

Te Puke Highway traffic is to be diverted at Domain Road down Tara Road, and traffic from Te Puke will be turned at Bell road. There is a considerable backlog

Earlier: Travellers to and from Te Puke face delays this afternooon as emergency services deal with a fire and an accident on both main routes.

The fire is beside the Te Puke highway between Welcome Bay Road and and Bell road. the accident is near the intersection of Parton Road and Bell Road.

A reporter at the scene reports traffic is stopped at the Tara road/Parton road roundabout.

The Te Puke highway is blocked by fire fighters, dealing with a blaze in the toi toi.

A caller to Sunlive says he struggled to get past the fire because of poor visibility in smoke.

"The wind's just smashing it across there," he says.

Earliers: Powerlines are believed to have been thrown across the road after a car collided with a pole at the intersection of Parton road and Bell Road, shortly after 2pm. At the accident scene in Bell Road powerlines are believed to be across the road.
