One person critical in Waihi crash

One person is in a critical condition and will be airlifted to hospital following a two vehicle crash in Waihi.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Karen Larking says the crash occurred near the intersection of State Highway 2 and Martin Street at about 1.50pm.

'As a result of the incident, one person was trapped in their vehicle and is in a critical condition. The patient has been extricated and was removed to an ambulance.”

Karrin says fire crews have been on scene for nearly 30 minutes and were in the process of setting up a landing site for a rescue helicopter which has been dispatched to the scene by ambulance staff.

A police spokesperson says it's believed a truck and a car were involved in the crash.

Earlier:

State Highway 2, near Waihi, is closed this afternoon following a crash.

Details are limited, but the NZ Transport Agency says the road is closed and emergency services are on the scene.

Diversions are in place and motorists are being advised to follow the direction of emergency services.
