With Christmas almost upon us, many people will be looking to fill up before hitting the road.
So this week we checked out some of the fuel stops along the city's main drag, aka Cameron Road.
The prices were nearly identical this week, with only a couple cents difference between stops. Only Mobil Chapel Street – tacked on the end of Cameron, in a way – stood out, being 10 cents cheaper.
Check out the prices below, and if you've seen it better, let us know in the comments, or over on our Facebook page.
Merry Christmas!

Gull

And we all know Gull is always the cheapest
Once again the Gull effect
Posted on 23-12-2016 12:12 | By CC8
Gull "controls" all of Hewletts road pricing and Mobil Chapel Street follows closely , it's a pity the person who owns both Cameron Road and Chapel Street Mobil doesn't match the prices at both sites ...then Cameron Road would all drop to Hewletts Road pricing. The really annoying thing is that Gull sells the same fuel in Rotorua for at least 14c a litre less than this. When Gull opened the Merivale station , Sunlive reported that Dave Bodger (Gull General Manager) , said fuel would always be cheaper at the unmanned sites than the manned sites, this has not proven to be true. Maybe Sunlive could take him up on that , checking the Merivale ,Papamoa, Bethelehem and Whakamarama unmanned stations against Hewletts Road, and the two Rotorua sites.
Cheaper petrol

Maybe not cheaper in the future, now t has been brought out by Caltex.
Gull pricing depends on where

Gull isn't always the best value, BUT certainly often leads the way at Hewlett's Rd, Mount Maunganui. The Mobil at Chapel Street consistently at the 'best value end', better than Gull self service at Merivale.

If Gull now bought out by Caltex which recently was purchased by Z all it,s going to take another purchase and there will be no competition left. How Z was allowed to purchase Caltex defies believe!
Cameron Road is expensive....

Bethleham, Te Puna, Omokoroa, Katikati and Waihi are all cheaper than central Tauranga (except Mobil Chapel St).Paid $1.07 today in TePuna BP for diesel.

I think you will find that fuel at the unmanned Gull sites are always cheaper than the manned sites of the competitors around the same area. Murray Gull at Merivale is not in the same area as Mobil mount but is much cheaper than Mobile Cameron road which is much closer.
What's with this Unleaded bit?
Posted on 24-12-2016 08:48 | By R1Squid
All our fuel is unleaded. Haven't been able to purchase anything else for 20 odd years.
Why is it?

Two bowsers selling the same brand of gas, within a couple of kilometres of each other, can have a 10c per litre price difference? Who sets the price? Is it regulated by Government, or the oil company, or does each individual owner of each station (if they are individually owned) decide? Gull, as noted by several posters, has been acquired by Caltex, who have been acquired by Z. Does anybody else feel uneasy about this?
Buyout

Gull has been purchased by Caltex Australia, totally independent of Caltex New Zealand / Z. Lots of promises of nothing changing, but time will and usually does tell all.
BP 91 fuel

On Thursday 15 December the BP by Hewletts Road flyover was $1.569. Same morning an hour later saw the BP at the lakes selling at $1.849. Glad I filled up at the Mount.Merry Christmas everyone.
The cause of high prices at some
Posted on 25-12-2016 10:12 | By astex
I can never understand the attitude of some kiwis. The high prices occur because people will pay them. If drivers still buy fuel at the high price stations they will continue to sell at those prices. If you are filling up you can travel across town, fill up at the lower price and save more than the fuel used to get there. We always moan about the price of everything in NZ but that is because, in other countries, the consumer shops around which drives prices down.
I agree iknow

You're right. My theory about BP at the lakes is that loads of tradesmen are still working in the area and have company fuel cards. They will just fill up there regardless of the price so that BP doesn't have competition. BP at the Mount has to compete with Hewletts Road. I do keep meaning to get that gasspy app. I'll drive around to find the cheapest just to support that outlet. Like you say, if everyone did that then the consumer wins!
Iknow

You are totally correct. We could put some outlets out of business if we ALL decided not to purchase there because we were sick of being ripped off.
