A head-on crash on State Highway 2, south of Katikati, is one of five police were called to in the weekend.

The crash saw two people taken to Tauranga Hospital, initially listed as being in critical condition.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing officer Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the crash near Aongatete at 4.30pm was the only injury crash police attended.

'The occupants of the Holden Commodore that crossed the centreline are still in Tauranga Hospital. One remains in a serious condition.

'The occupants of the Toyota have since been discharged from hospital.”

Ian says the Commodore was heading north when it crossed the centreline.

The investigation is continuing.

Police would like to speak with witnesses who haven't yet been spoken to.

Information can be passed onto Tauranga Police Station on 07 577 4300.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously via the Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 line.

Meanwhile, the occupants of a car that crashed into a car, power police and fence were lucky to have been able to walk away from the Sunday afternoon crash.

Police were called to the crash at 2.09pm on SH2, at Pongakawa.

'That was a car versus car,” says Ian.

'A driver heading north has crossed the centreline, crashing with an oncoming vehicle, before crashing through a fence and colliding with a concrete power pole.

'There were no injuries at all, they were extremely lucky.”
