A woman was rushed to hospital after suffering a suspected spinal injury while at sea in the Coromandel over the weekend.

Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter Trust spokesperson Kerrie Spicer says the rescue chopper was dispatched to Fletcher Bay in the Northern Coromandel at about 4.15pm on Sunday.

'A female patient had been sitting on a boat which went over a large wave, causing her to bounce up and land heavily, causing pain to her spine.

'The ARHT Paramedic waded into the water and onto the boat to assess and treat her.”

With the help of a Department of Conservation ranger and campers, the woman was moved onto a stretcher from the boat to shore.

She was airlifted to Auckland City Hospital in a moderate condition.
