A&P show 'not just for farming folk'

Kent Eynon had a little lamb, its fleece has never been shorn. But on Sunday it will be shorn, after avoiding the shears since it was born.

A top-class shearer is expected to give the now two-year-old hirsute sheep the long overdue haircut at the Tauranga A&P Lifestyle Show taking place at the Tauranga Racecourse on Cameron Road, from 10am to 4pm.

Danny Gill, organiser of the show's cattle section, found the sheep in the backblocks of Pyes Pa. It was the family pet lamb at Kent's place, and the owner's happy for the sheep to be shorn at the show.

'It's certainly much hairier than the average sheep,” says Danny.

How many pounds of fleece the sheep is carrying will be determined at the Tauranga A&P Lifestyle Show on January 15. It's hoped one of the competitors from the World Shearing and Woolhandling Championships will be in Tauranga to do the honours of shearing the sheep.

Tauranga A&P Lifestyle Show president David Harricks says the show will be a wonderful, inexpensive, family day out – and not just for farming folk.

'It's for lifestylers – whether you have a worm farm at your apartment block, a vege garden in your backyard, or a lifestyle block with cattle in the country.

'There will be plenty for everyone to see and do including equestrian events and pony rides, a petting zoo, and cattle show, strongest man and wood chopping competitions, trade-stall holders, food trucks, artisan goods, a rock climbing wall and water slides, a fairground, lifestyle lane and old machinery.”

Big crowds are expected at the event, which costs $10 for adults and children under 12 are free from: eventfinda.co.nz or at the gate on the day.

Ticket holders will receive an entry in the draw to win $1000 cash or a barbecue. There will be spot prizes too.

People are invited to bring picnics, and dogs on a leash are allowed.
