The road running through the centre of Te Puke will be closed later this week to allow significant construction work to occur.

Western Bay of Plenty District Council transportation operations manager Alex Finn says Jellicoe Street will be closed to traffic overnight on January 18 and January 19.

He says the road might also be closed on January 20.

As part of the works, contractors will be proceeding with the removal and reconstruction of kerbing, and road surfacing work, which would cause major delays if it were carried out during the day.

'Doing the work at night will allow contractors unrestricted access to the worksite, speed up the progress, and minimise delays to traffic.

'Unfortunately the night works may create some disturbance for those people living close to the work site. We apologise for any inconvenience the work may cause.”

Detours will be signposted along Queen Street and Commerce Lane.

Jellicoe Street will be opened temporarily if very large vehicles need to get through during the closures.

If necessary, the closure may be extended to overnight January 20.

If anyone has concerns about the closure they are advised to phone the Western Bay of Plenty District Council on 07-571-8008.
