One person is dead following a crash on State Highway 1, north of Tirau.
Emergency services were called to the two-car crash around 4.30pm yesterday.
Police say one person was initially described as being in a critical condition. That person died a short time later.
The serious crash unit was called in to investigate the crash scene, which meant the highway 4km north of Tirau was closed for some time.
The highway is now open, according to the NZTA website.
Police are continuing to investigate the crash.
