Te Puke's $1 million main street upgrade is on schedule as work continues on the reconstruction outside the town centre.

The schedule for the coming week includes sealing half of the road from Gulliver Road to Maketu Road and to complete sealing the rest by the end of the month.

The kerbs and footpaths from No.3 Road to east of Cameron Road are expected to be completed, as is the widening the road between Manoeka Road and Kopuroa Canal on the Tauranga bound side of the road.

At night there will be resealing between Poplar lane and Welcome Bay roundabout and work on asphalt at night between King St and No.1 Rd – to be complete by February 10.

Road reconstruction and flat roundabouts (eggabouts) from Te Puke Quarry Rd to Atuaroa Ave starts next week, with completion by Easter.

The reconstructions are a result of the handover process following the opening of the TEL, says the Western Bay of Plenty District Council wesbite.

It's now SH2 and the former state highway is now the Te Puke Highway.

As part of the handover process, the NZ Transport Agency and Council agreed to a programme of works throughout Te Puke to:

  • Make the Te Puke Highway fit for purpose as an important local road
  • Improve the safety, aesthetics and functionality of the town centre.
  • Physical Works on the highway that began in January 2016 and will be complete by the end of June this year.

The majority of work is being funded by the Transport Agency as part of the agreement.

How can you improve something that worked really well?By losing carparks? Driving retailers out of town? Putting in unneccesary pedestrian crossings? Removing grass and replacing with cockroaches? It wasn't broke - so why fix it?Interesting to watch the chaor during Kiwifruit season! Please, GIVE US OUR TOWN BACK!!!
