Purpose of roadworks questioned

Roadworks along Chapel Street are causing problems for motorists. Supplied photos.

Roadworks have begun this week in Bureta, with the road surface ripped up from the Chapel Street bridge along to Vale Street.

However, questions remain as to why the council has decided to undertake the changes.

A regular commuter on the stretch of road sent photos to the SunLive newsroom of traffic build-up as a result of the temporary 30km/h speed limit.

He says traffic was backed up to the BP station on Ngatai Road yesterday morning.

The traffic yesterday.

He notes a new footpath is being installed on the grass triangle between Ngatai Road and Vale Street.

But he questions the council's motivation in ripping up the road surface too, as he believes there was nothing wrong with the condition of the road.

According to the Tauranga City Council website, resealing work is undertaken to ensure the city's road network remains safe, efficient and able to cope with the amount of traffic using it.

Most resealing takes place in the summer months, excluding the busy Christmas and New Year period.

'Resurfacing or resealing is necessary to waterproof and protect the underlying road layers and provide a smooth riding surface for vehicles. Waterproofing prevents potholing and more substantial road failures.”

Council has been contacted for specific comment on the Chapel Street roadworks.
