TCDC pleased with freedom campers

The number of freedom campers issued infringements this summer season has fallen dramatically from the previous summer, says the Thames-Coromandel District Council.

In total 297 infringements were issued from December 2016 up to January 2017, while for the same period last summer, the number of infringements issued was 520.

TCDC's community environment manager Barry Smedts says it appears the message is getting out to freedom campers about the appropriate places for this type of camping on the Coromandel.

'This is an extremely positive result, as our bylaws officers are not using any different tactics to previous years.”

Freedom camping in a certified self-contained vehicle is allowed in many parts of the Coromandel that our Council owns or manages. But in some areas it is either prohibited outright or allowed within clearly marked sites.

Both these prohibited and restricted areas are clearly sign-posted, says Barry.

because the word has got around about the council , and the tourists in the know avoid the place like the plague. The motor caravan association prints the names of friendly councils in their magazine and that's where the money is spent.TCDC have always been one eyed and expensive , even to groups within their own district... e.g Beach Hop... if it isn't in Thames , Thames takes a big cut anyway. I.E. $20-30k for road closures, $5k for a traffic management plan etc etc....STUPID to say the least. And then the day Beach Hop starts they rip up the roads and/or reseal them with coarse chip.....and 30kph areas...jus what you need when there is 100,000 people on their way to town, someof them in cars worth $$250-300k and $100000 paint jobs....TCDC -----------bah humbug!
