Opotiki woman continuing recovery in BOP

An Opotiki woman who spent six weeks injured and lost in West Coast bush has been transferred to Whakatane Hospital.

A Bay of Plenty District Health Board spokesman says Shelly Crooks is an inpatient with them and her family has requested privacy while she recovers.

Shelly had been an inpatient at Grey Base Hospital in Greymouth since she was discovered by a member of the public on the banks of the Fox River on February 5.

The 36-year-old was transferred to Whakatane Hospital on Tuesday.

Shelly originally set out to do a four-day tramp in the Mt Bovis area and was last seen in Punakaiki, north of Greymouth, on December 22.

During the tramp she became disorientated and sustained a leg injury, however, using her extensive bush craft knowledge she manged to survive six weeks in the bush between Punakaiki and Fox River.

Shelly was discovered by a member of the public who public recognised her on a track near the Fox River and called emergency services.
