Extreme fire danger, despite rain

Rain is not expected to reduce fire danger.

An extremely high fire danger continues in the Western Bay of Plenty and Waikino districts, in spite of recent rain.

Fire permits remain suspended, and there is still significant concern, says Pumicelands Rural Fire Authority zone manager Alan Pearce.

'Little rain has fallen for nearly a month and what we have had is insignificant. Local weather station readings confirm drought index figures and the expected rain over the coming weekend will not alleviate the fire danger sufficiently to allow resumption in burning

'The Authority is considering daily aerial inspections of the zone to detect fire and deal with it when located.”

Contractors and machinery operators undertaking hot works, such as welding or grinding, must ensure they can control and extinguish any fires that inadvertently occur as a result. It is recommended that hot work activity is supervised at all times.

Alan is asking all landowners to remember their responsibilities, and says the costs of suppression will fall on them if a fire occurs on their property of their fault.

'It is not unusual for wild fire suppression costs to exceed $250,000, with some recent events that go much higher.”

Landowners and anyone involved with commercial or recreational activity in rural areas are advised to obtain rural fire insurance cover.

Alan is happy to discuss matters relating to open air fires and can be contacted on 07 571 8008.
