What’s On? Surf lifesaving & drifting

File Photo.

Morena and good morning Sunners, welcome to Saturday and the first day of what will hopefully be a fantastic weekend.

With a fine day overall forecast, the weather's looking perfect for the 2017 Bay of Plenty Senior Championship down at Omanu Beach, and the third round of the Demon Energy D1NZ National Drifting Championship at ASB Baypark Stadium.

Omanu Beach will play host to nearly 300 athletes this weekend for the 2017 Bay of Plenty Senior Championship which kicks off today at 9am.

Mount Maunganui Lifeguard Service will be looking to defend the title for the 12th time, having held it since 2006.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand Eastern Region sport manager Mark Inglis says the event draws upon the best of the best, testing both their speed and endurance, to determine the 2017 Bay champions in their respective disciplines.

Individual events and IRB racing will be held today, with the water rescue and team events taking place on Sunday. To follow the live results visit http://liveresults.co.nz/sls or for more information visit Surf Life Saving NZ's website.

If you prefer the smell of burning rubber over the sea salt, then head down to ASB Baypark Stadium for the third round of the Demon Energy D1NZ National Drifting Championship, with gates opening at 11am.

Eighty of New Zealand's best drifters driving high-octane cars pushing between 400-1000hp will go head-to-head on the short and sharp freshly laid concrete circuit inside the stadium.

Along with the D1NZ Pro Drifting and Pro-Sport Championships, there's plenty of other action on offer including action sport demos from FMX, BMX and Stunt bike riders, D1NZ RC Drifting, plus a huge hard park with music, food, beer gardens, trade-stands, licensed bars and more.

The D1NZ will be bringing its newly formatted and highly popular Night-Show to the Bay which will see drifting under lights inside the stadium with pyrotechnics.

Gates open today at 11am, with the night show from 4.30pm onwards. Tickets cost $15-$140. For more information visit: www.d1nz.com
