Women’s Triathlon: ‘Nailed it!’

Hundreds of competitors will be celebrating their successes today, as the Generation Homes Women's Triathlon wraps up for another year.

The event saw around 700 women swim 400m along Pilot Bay, before setting off on a 10km bike ride and finishing with a 4km run.

Sun Media journalist Zoe Hunter was among the ladies giving it a go – although she hasn't raced since taking part in the Weet-Bix TRYathlon as a 10-year-old.

'The swim was really difficult because the conditions were choppy, but I did well. The bike ride was really hard, as we were going against the wind. But the run was awesome – I've been doing a lot for running training and I passed a lot of people.”

She says the atmosphere was ‘really cool'.

'The ladies were lovely and encouraging. Every woman who competed should be proud of themselves.”

She and a friend made commemorative t-shirts to celebrate the event, with ‘Nailed it' written across the back. Since Zoe managed to achieve her personal goal of finishing well within two hours, she thinks they've earnt the epithet.

When SunLive spoke with her, prize giving was still going on in the background, revealing some amazing female athletes are out there.

'There was one woman in the over-70s category who did it all in 55 minutes, which is pretty damn impressive.”

Now the race is finished, competitors will have the rest of the afternoon to recuperate. For Zoe, though, only one thought has been in her mind, motivating her and driving her across the finish line.

'I'm off to Rising Tide to have a few beers and dumplings,” she laughs.
