Tidal stairs falling into place

Almost all the tidal stairs have been installed along the waterfront. Supplied photo.

Tauranga City Council's Access to Water project is a little closer to completion, with most of the tidal stairs in place this week.

Drone footage provided for SunLive gives a bird's eye view of the scope and progression of the construction.

HEB Construction project manager Dean Taylor says they're currently on track for an April 11 opening.

'So far the stairs have just fallen into place. It's been really good.”

Since most of the stairs will be under water when the project is finished, installing them has required walling off the sea so the team can work in dry conditions.

A wall of sheet piles has been employed to keep the water at bay. Each pile, standing four metres above ground, are driven eight metres down into the seabed by a vibrating hammer.

'They lock together to form a cofferdam,” says Dean. 'They're quite commonly used when digging holes and you need a retaining wall.”

He notes it does leak a bit, though, which is why they have a pump going to remove any water that seeps through – even from the landward side, which is of course reclaimed land and thus not 100 per cent watertight.

Deputy Mayor Kelvin Clout says the project will allow people to make the most of our 'beautiful' harbour.

'It's going to be great for downtown Tauranga's vibrancy.”

Access to Water project leader Morgan Jones agrees, and says he's seen a lot positive interest in the CBD from businesses at the moment, thanks in part to the waterfront revamp.

The tidal stairs, along with the new pier and pontoon, are expected to be big draws in the summer for schoolkids, who both Morgan and Dean have seen doing plenty of bombs off Matapihi Bridge.

The next stage of the project will see artist Elliot Collins working on the lettering and art to go with the steps.

The entire area should be open to the public by Easter.

It has been excellent to see the pictorial history of the area attached to the containers. I hope the photos etc will be permanently displayed somewhere - the new museum, perhaps??

I can't wait till it's finished! As a ratepayer I am exceedingly happy these are going in on the waterfront and I think it really is going to bring some sole into the central city. I'll be having a lunch time swim that's for sure.

I think it is great to make use of the foreshore and money well spent. Hopefully the business's will benefit as well as the general public.

that old trucker is from the blue rinse brigade that wants to stone wall any creativity in this city? Think about the big picture and how many people will enjoy this facility and bring good much needed cash flow back into our city.

if you think a few concrete steps and a pontoon are going to be the saviour of the CBD, and @Heart..... good luck with your " lunch time" swim thing, as I have seen no plans for good restrooms or changing facilities, but no worries you can run across the rail lines wrapped in your beach towel!!!

Looks like a good place to fish from so I think I will sell my boat.

Childrens safety..

Hopefully some kind of fencing with the childrens park so close by? It only takes a minute for an inquisitive child to wander while parents are either talking or on their phones..

A Great Initiative

Just like the Pilot Bay boardwalk, these stairs will become such a well liked initiative that people will wonder what all the fuss was about. Looking forward to using them.

Ahhh the hatred of anyone who has a different idea to you eh? He must be an old ( is that a crime now?) fuddy duddy who obviously should not be entitled to an opinion because you know better than he does. I am not old, but in my opinion, obviously not as well informed as yours, it is a waste of money that us workers have had stolen off us in what they call "rates" and probably would not be as effective in reviving the CBD as a simple doing away with parking meters.

Great assett

Good work, good initiative. It's art in all its forms that makes a nice place.
