Pedestrian hit by vehicle on TEL

UPDATED: 1.25PM: A section of the Tauranga Eastern Link which was closed following a collision involving a pedestrian and a car has been re-opened.

The eastbound lanes of the highway, between the Sandhurst Drive and Bruce Road off-ramps in Papamoa, were closed after a male pedestrian was hit at 11am.

The man sustained critical injuries as a result of the collision and was transported to Tauranga Hospital via ambulance.

EARLIER 11.35AM:

A pedestrian has suffered critical injuries after being struck by a vehicle on the Tauranga Eastern Link.

Emergency services, including police and ambulance staff, are currently at the scene of the accident on Bruce Road in Papamoa Beach.

The pedestrian has been transported via ambulance to Tauranga Hospital.

'Police were called at 11am when a car has hit a pedestrian, who currently has critical injuries,” says a spokesperson.

At this stage it is unknown if the driver of the vehicle has sustained any injuries as a result of the incident.

The NZ Transport Agency says eastbound traffic is currently being diverted via Sandhurst Drive, Gloucester Road, Gravatt Road and Domain Road then back on to State Highway 2/TEL.

Police have shut down a section of the Tauranga Eastern Link after a pedestrian was struck by vehicle.

Several callers to the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline says the pedestrian was struck near the Bruce Road off-ramp at about 11am.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says police staff are at the scene and a detour is currently in place, with eastbound traffic being diverted down Sandhurst Drive and through Papamoa. Westbound traffic should remain unaffected by the incident.

At this stage it is unknown what injuries the pedestrian has suffered, or the severity of their injuries.
