Strong quake felt in Tauranga

An earthquake with an intensity rating of ‘strong' struck off the East Cape coast in the early hours of this morning.

The 5.0 magnitude quake was located some 85km north-east of Te Araroa, at a depth of 15km.

Reports of the earthquake, being felt moderately, quickly came in shortly after midnight from Hick's Bay.

Weaker signs of the quake were also reported in the Eastern Bay of Plenty, while it was also felt as far away as Tauranga, Manawatu and Napier.

No tsunami warning was issued by Civil Defence either at the time or in the hours that followed.
