James found 'safe and well'

UPDATED 5.10PM: A young boy who was earlier reported missing in Rotorua has now been located and returned to his family.

In a post to Facebook, police say James Dawson was found safe and well and they thank the public for their help to find the six-year-old.

'[His] caregivers are really happy to have James home with them,” the post reads.

Earlier today James was reported missing from Kea Street Specialist School in Selwyn Heights, Rotorua, at about 1pm.

Up to 10 police units were involved in the search for James, with water ways the predominant focus of their search due to the boy's love of the water.

Police need your help to locate a six-year-old boy who was reported missing from Kea Street Specialist School in Rotorua earlier today.

James Dawson was last seen at the Selwyn Heights school at around 1pm, and was wearing a grey long sleeve top and blue shorts. He is non-verbal and has a love of the water.

'His family say he would jump into water without thinking,” says a police spokesperson.

'Police ask that the public keep a lookout for a child of James' description around bodies of water in the area.”

If you have seen James please contact Rotorua Police immediately on (07) 349 9400 so they can return him to his mother.


James was last seen wearing a grey long sleeve top and blue shorts.
