For years and years the old Cream Can building on Maunganui Road has been an institution of the Mount Maunganui music scene.

But the shadow of the axe looms over its head, with the building which is currently home to The Hop House scheduled to be demolished soon and replaced with a 'development” of some sort.

'The Hop House and its previous incarnations has been a staple of the gig diet for musos for a few years, for sure,” says local musician Dylan Israel.

'Its demise is a huge blow for the music community, local musos will have fewer options for places to hold gigs now.”

To celebrate the venue's history and what it's meant to the local music community, Dylan and members of local band Spoonfed have organised one final soirée, the ‘Hop House Funeral - Down With Corporations' gig which is on at The Hop House this Saturday.

The free gig will feature five bands who've rocked the 2m x 2m stage and filled the venue to its rafters with mean local music over the years – Super Narco Man, Dead Recipe, Joe's Van, Spoonfed and Mini Simmons.

'What made it so well-loved was the fact the venue encouraged original music, that's what made it so popular with the local musos. So we wanted to get all of our friends' bands who've played regularly at the Hop House for one big, massive and final hurrah.”

The Hop House Funeral - Down With Corporations gig takes place at The Hop House in Mount Maunganui on Saturday, March 25, from 7pm till late. Entry is free. For more information visit the gig's Facebook event page.
