Dog neutering funding injection welcomed

A plan to neuter menacing dogs is hoped to reduce the number of dog attacks.

Tauranga City Council and Western Bay of Plenty District Council are set to receive government funding to help subsidise neutering for menacing dogs in the region

A total of $55,956.52 will be granted to Tauranga City Council and $44,830.43 to Western Bay of Plenty District Council.

The grants, made out of a pool of $850,000 of Government funding announced by Associate Minister for Local Government Jacqui Dean today, is part of a New Zealand-wide action plan to reduce the risk and harm of dog attacks announced in late 2016.

'Most dogs are gentle, loyal and caring animals, but we all know that some dogs give the others a bad name. It's important that we keep our kids, and our community, safe from menacing dogs,” Bay of Plenty MP Todd Muller.

'The community will be safer thanks to these neutering programmes, which are designed to reduce the risk of dog attacks.

"The number of menacing dogs will reduce in the long term, as neutering is linked to decreased roaming and aggression.”

Todd says the legislation is not targeted at good, law abiding dog owners or specifically at bad dog owners.

'The legislation is targeted towards the many dog owners in our community who want to neuter their dogs but can't afford to do so.

'This subsidy will give them a hand up to do so, and our community will see the benefits.”

The campaigns are being carried out by Tauranga City Council, Western Bay of Plenty District Council and 30 other territorial authorities, often in coordination with local veterinarians and SPCAs.

Many territorial authorities are also combining this neutering offer with their own offers of subsidised microchipping and/or registration.

Other aspects of the national action plan launched last year will be progressed in 2017.

This includes a bill to require the licensing of high-risk dog owners, which is expected to be introduced later this year.

this is way over the top. Tell the people to get their dog fixed other wise it will be taken away from them....these people want everything for nothing....

We know how to waste money

Why should the council , government even consider this . Make the ones that own these dogs pay , next thing you'll be feeding them as well . I might agree if the owners wiser to be nuetered or spayed as part of the deal .

Unbelievable

Menacing dogs should be shot - they don't bite with their "balls"!

Once again the community takes on a responsibility that belongs elsewhere. If these people can't afford to look after their dogs they shouldn't have them. What next? subsidised vaccinations and registration. Will all pensioners get this subsidy?

Good grief

Hey what about the low income earner those who adore their dogs and they are a means of security and companionship. I know of one case where a sharpai X has had 10 pups 2nd litter this year the owners are struggling to find the $400+ to get the bitch speyed. Why cant these folk be helped???

So called dangerous X breeds pit bulls etc

Hey why target funds to desex these breeds!!! as far as I am concerned they all need the euthanasia needle administered and these breeds have no place in society. sure I know I will get a bit of flak over this but it is the truth. Channel that money into helping those who basically cant afford to ge their dogs desexed etc. annual dog rego is costly enough the cost of that needs to be lowered and that would buy a lot of food and maybe those who are struggling can afford to spey and casterate their dogs. Dogs are a means of security of comfort and companionship to a lot of us!!!
