Govt. should heed RBNZ Govenor's warning

National needs to listen to the Reserve Bank Governor's warning that too few houses are being built and adopt Labour's KiwiBuild plan, says Labour's Housing spokesperson Phil Twyford.

'Just two weeks ago, National blocked a Labour Bill that would require the Government to build 10,000 affordable homes a year. That has proven to be short-sighted with the Reserve Bank Governor Graeme Wheeler now warning that the continued under-supply of houses could trigger another wave of house price rises.

'Treasury says we're short 60,000 houses in this country and the shortage is growing by over 1,000 houses a month. After eight years of bungling and bumbling, National just isn't getting enough houses built.

'It's not too late for Bill English and Nick Smith to realise their mistake and back Labour's affordable housing plan. KiwiBuild will build 100,000 affordable homes for first homebuyers to purchase.

'KiwiBuild is part of Labour's comprehensive plan to boost the supply of housing, restore the Kiwi dream of owning your own place, crack down on speculators, and help families in need,” says Phil Twyford.
