Strong quakes felt throughout

Did you feel any shaking overnight?

Two strong earthquakes have been felt through the North Island overnight.

A magnitude 4.8 tremor struck the bottom of the North Island around 11pm.

It was 14km deeps and was reported to have been felt by more than 26000 people across Wellington.

GeoNet says people in Nelson also reported feeling it.

Half an hour later, a magnitude 4.5 quake struck in the Cook Strait at a depth of 13km.

More than 6000 people reported feeling it from Palmerston North to Abel Tasman National Park.

GeoNet described the intensity of both quakes as "strong".
