Bay of Plenty iwi are well-represented in this year's Ngarimu VC and 28th Maori Battalion Memorial Scholarships.
Young affiliates of Ngai Te Rangi, Te Arawa, Whakatohea, and Tuhoe were among the eight recipients of the scholarships.
The scholarships commemorate Victoria Cross recipient Second Lieutenant Te Moananui a Kiwa Ngarimu, and the soldiers of the 28th Maori Battalion.
Among the winners is Rotorua Boys' High School student Tipene James (Te Arawa); Waikato University Ba and BSc student Tekiteora Rolleston-Gabel (Ngai Tuhoe, Ngati Kahu, Ngai Te Rangi); and aspiring Masters of Law student Arena Williams (Te Aitanga a Mahaki, Rongowhakaata, Tuhoe, Whakatohea, Kati Mamoe, Kai Tahu).
Arena is one of three Master's scholars, who will receive $15,000 per year for up to two years, while Tipene and Tekiteora are among the five undergraduate scholars who will receive $10,000 per year for up to five years.
Education Minister and Ngarimu board chair Hekia Parata says the scholarships recognise the ‘exciting futures' these eight awardees have ahead of them.
'They have already demonstrated what young Maori can achieve with hard work and dedication and I look forward to seeing what more they accomplish in the future.”
Applications for the next round of Ngarimu VC and 28th Maori Battalion Memorial Scholarships open on May 1 and close September 30.

Good on you, and I say that as an older non-maori Kiwi. Like the trade apprentices, you are the guys (both genders) who will run the outfit after us oldies have gone.

While I wish the recipients well who are possibly too young to appreciate the race based nature of these scholarships, it is sad to see 85% of the population were excluded from applying, based on race.
