Powerco has field crews on high alert in the event of expected heavy rain and high winds over the next two days causing damage to its network.

Powerco Network Operations Manager Phil Marsh says the remnants of Cyclone Cook were expected to approach the Bay of Plenty from noon Thursday with heavy rain and damaging wind gusts expected in Tauranga and Coromandel.

'After that the weather system is predicted to move down the North Island's east coast and could affect Powerco's Wairarapa and Tararua regions from 6pm until midnight.

Homeowners should store or tie down backyard gear to limit the chance of flying debris striking power lines.

'Trampolines and outdoor furniture become missiles and get tangled in power lines during gale force winds."

Downed lines were dangerous and must be treated as live at all times.

People should keep clear of them and call Powerco on 0800 27 27 27 if they see lines down or trees tangled in them.

'Falling trees and flying debris are the greatest threat to electricity supply remaining intact."

Customers wanting information about power cuts can go to www.powerco.co.nz or call their electricity retailer.
