Clearing the roads after Cook

A slip on State Highway 29 blocked the road overnight on Thursday. The slip has now been cleared.

Stop/go traffic management teams are out in force today as road crews continue to clear slips left in the wake of ex-cyclone Cook.

Roads that were closed are now all open, but drivers on the Coromandel may face delays as there is stop/go traffic management in place on State Highway 25, on both sides of the peninsula.

The Thames Coast Road, which was closed because of slips, now has traffic management as crew work to clear slips north of Thames.

There is stop/go traffic signs at Whakatete Bay and at Ruamahunga, half way between Waiomu and Tapu.

SH25 is down to one lane about 1km north of Kirita Bay, due to a wash out.

The Kopu Hikuai Road is open with stop go traffic management in place on the Thames side.

On the Eastern side, the washout on Pumpkin Hill near the Sailors Grave turnoff has been cleared, but traffic management remains in place and there is a 30k speed restriction. A couple of kilometres further north there is again traffic management in place.

The Karangahake gorge is open with a 30km/h speed restriction and stop go traffic management due to slip clearing at the Karangahake end.

Highways in the Eastern Bay of Plenty are open apart from the section of SH2, between Awakeri and Taneatua, where the Pekatahi Bridge remains closed while a new deck is constructed.

The work is being delayed by Cyclone Debbie's flooding last month, which washed away many of the materials. An update will be provided next week.

One Lane of SH30 is still closed on the western side of Ruato Bay, Lake Rotoiti.

The Lane is expected to remain closed for some time until the slip can be stabilised and fully cleared. Temporary stopping of traffic in both directions for about 10-15 minutes at a time will often be required. NZTA advises driver to allow an extra 15-20 minutes for the journey.
