Properties in Otumoetai have lost copper broadband and voice services after two cables were accidentally severed on Tuesday.
A Chorus spokesperson says a third party contractor performing work on Otumoetai Road accidentally damaged a 1200x cable and a 400x cable which has affected services in the area.
According to the spokesperson, 70 faults and four faults respectively have so far been reported to the telecommunications infrastructure company since Tuesday.
'In order to resolve the problem, we need to cut in a section of cable, with the materials due to arrive in Tauranga today. Services will be restored as soon as possible.
'We understand the frustration those affected will be experiencing, however we are working quickly to rectify the situation.”
The spokesperson says Chorus encourages anyone experiencing issues to please report it to their service provider.
'There is also the option for customers to request their landline be redirected to mobile as a temporary fix.”

for whom their landline is their contact with the world, and who don't have a mobile. In the same way, all the non-wireless medical alarms are out of action, too. I'm seriously worried about the safety of my elderly (over 90) mother, who won't have the safety of her alarm, and it's a long way to travel to keep checking on her.The careless contractor needs to know his actions could have serious consequences, and have already affected people's ordinary lives and safety,
