The ladies from the Tauranga Bowls Club might be bringing home gold tomorrow, if everything aligns perfectly.
The four-strong women's team are through to the lawn bowls final of the 60-69 age group, at the World Masters Games in Auckland.
Helen Harris, Mary Solomon, June Mabbett, and Margaret Roberts are the talented players on whose shoulder's the club's hopes rest, after the men's team were knocked out of the four-person tournament.
Mary says today she and Helen are in post-section play for the women's pairs.
'We're qualifying for the semi-final, so if we lose a game, we're gone. June and Gerald Lockett are also playing for a bronze in the mixed pairs tomorrow.”
She says there's been a strong level of competition, with players from all over the country and world, including Australia and Canada.
Tauranga Bowls Club vice-president Dave Giles says the women are all regular players who've been in various tournaments before.
'Year before last the men's team were runners-up in the New Zealand championships. The ladies aren't usually so strong, so it's a marvellous achievement for them.”
As for Mary, she says their winning strategy is quite simply getting on the jack as quickly as possible.
'I always think bowls isn't about age, it's about skill. The games are all timed, so you've only got an hour and 15 minutes for a game. So there's no dilly-dallying around trying to find the right line and the right weight. You've got to be focused and make your calls quickly.”
