Drone footage shows pipeline park prep

Trenches have been dug and a pit is being prepared at Jordan Field as the Southern Pipeline project progresses.

Drone footage commissioned by SunLive shows the progression of the project to date.

Over the next few weeks, large drilling machines and large steel pipe, both the outer sleeves and steel casing pipes, will be delivered to the site.

The steel casing pipes will start to be welded together. Later in the year, once the harbour crossing has been drilled all the way through, the welded string of steel pipes will be winched through to Matapihi.

The pipeline will actually be drilled from Matapihi, where site office containers will soon be placed on the new waterside reclamation area, says a Tauranga City Council spokesperson.

'Over the next few weeks large steel pipes will be delivered to the construction site. They will be big, but these are not the steel casing pipes – they are the outer steel sleeves.

'The large outer steel sleeves will be pushed into the harbour at either end. All drilling work is done through the outer sleeves to protect the harbour bed.”

The harbour crossing will be drilled from Matapihi to Memorial Park. A steel casing pipe will be welded together at Memorial Park, which will be then winched through from Memorial Park to Matapihi, says the council spokesperson.

The inner pipe of polyethelene will be pushed through the steel casing from Memorial Park to Matapihi. This is the actual wastewater pipe.

The first phase of construction will require the outer sleeves to be pushed into the harbour. They are designed to be a protective layer while the harbour crossing is being drilled.
