The ladies from the Tauranga Bowls Club have come from behind to score a stunning victory in their team final at the World Masters Game.

The game on Thursday morning was the club's sole chance for medals, and although they were guaranteed either gold or silver, naturally they wanted to take first.

Mary Solomon says things weren't looking great from the get-go.

'We didn't get off to a good start – we dropped a five on the first end, and the second end we went down one. So we were about 7-2 down around about the fourth end, but we got to 8-2 down and picked up a four, which put us back in the game 8-6.

'From there we just kept clawing back until we were 10-all on the ninth end. We were lucky to score two on the last end to nail the game.”

She says they were playing against one of the top Auckland clubs, Carlton Cornwall, who had beaten the Tauranga women in a pairs match earlier on – making their victory all the sweeter

'We're the only bowls club from the Bay of Plenty who entered the competition, which is quite amazing. So we're over the moon to win.”

She says the global nature of the games means this will probably be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the team.

'Because it's the World Masters Games, it's highly unlikely it will be here again for many years. The next one is in Japan in four years, and it's unlikely we'll go. But it's been a great experience.”
