MetService has issued a severe weather warning for the Bay of Plenty, with heavy rains expected to fall today.

Alongside the warning, a severe weather watch has also been issued for the Coromandel as heavy rains may pelt the peninsula tonight.

'A trough, preceded by a moist north to northwest flow, will bring periods of rain to much of the North Island today and Sunday morning,” says a MetService spokesperson.

Rain is expected to become heavy in the Bay this evening, with MetService estimating 100-140mm rain to accumulate in the 18 hours from 6pm to 12pm on Sunday.

Peak intensities of 25-35mm per hour plus thunderstorms are also predicted for Sunday morning.

While on the Coromandel, heaviest falls are expected about the ranges where localised downpours are possible from this evening until mid-morning Sunday.

'This amount of rain will cause rivers and streams to rise rapidly, and may cause surface flooding and slips, plus make driving conditions hazardous.”
