Due to the bad weather, Baypark Speedway has been forced to call off what was meant to be final event of the speedway season tonight.

But promoter Bernie Gillion says the Fireworks Extravaganza and Harry Fredrickson Gold Cup has not been cancelled, only postponed, and will take place next weekend on Saturday, May 6.

'Yeah it was going to be a pretty big event tonight, but the rains forced us to change our plans again,” he explains.

So fingers crossed, next Saturday will hopefully see some $20,000 of fireworks lighting up the night sky above the speedway's stadium, and stock car drivers from the top half of the North Island competing for the Harry Fredrickson Stock Car Memorial Gold Cup.

This season the speedway promoter has been forced to cancel a number of their race meetings because of the 'the bloody weather”.

But Bernie's not giving up yet.

'We're going to talk to Bay Venues and see what the chance is of holding another meeting in a couple of weeks, so we'll let you know.”

A shame

Cancelled would have saved ratepayers something like $30-50,000 loss on the night, in fact shutting the place down would save around $2.5m in rates for all ratepayers every year.
