Ultra Modern show at Macandmor

Ultra Modern Unit exhibition artists Jimmy Robertson, Sean O’Rourke, Alistair Scarlett and John Baxter. The fifth artist Paul Cornwell is overseas.

No mountains and lakes were promised for the Ultra Modern Unit exhibition that opened on Friday evening at Tauranga's Macandmor Gallery in the Goddard Centre.

It's the first time artists Alistair Scarlett, Sean O'Rourke, John Baxter, Paul Cornwell and Jimmy Robertson have exhibited together.

The group, which Macandmor Gallery director Murray Clode has dubbed ‘The Rat Pack', are showing new work covering a range of styles and subjects including pop art screen prints, twists on NZ icons, graphic art, airbrush and pen drawings.

Launching the exhibition with a theatrical lifting of the doors, four of the artists were revealed standing in dimmed coloured lights and smoke against the backdrop of their work – certainly an eerie atmosphere, heightening the artistic appetite.

John Baxter, a founding member of The Incubator, is well-known for his fine ink work and abstract acrylics and surrealism and brings to the exhibition a twist on NZ icons.

Jimmy Robertson's airbrush art often features urethane based acrylic paint on a variety of substrates and he spends much of his time creating photorealistic images over ground aluminium panels.

Central themes of Paul Cornwell's bold graphic work includes NZ wildlife and the kiwi coastal lifestyle. While Sean O'Rourke's strong beliefs in human rights permeates his work which is also influenced by street art, symbolism and word play.

Alistair Scarlett who studied design in England has work in collections in Tokyo, Scandinavia and the USA. His digitally created pop art screen print images using real ink have ignited a growing fan base.

The exhibition runs from April 28 to May 13.
