Police have named the Rotorua man who died in a crash on State Highway 36 on Monday.

He was 63-year-old Nelson Hei Hei.

Police say an investigation into the cause of the crash – which closed the state highway for several days – is still ongoing.

The reason for the road closure was the spillage of 84, 200 litre drums of resin and ferric chloride that fell into the Mangorewa Gorge.

They came off the truck and trailer unit which was involved in the crash, and required the fire service to clean up the area after the vehicle was removed on Tuesday.

The highway was reopened on Friday, but currently has a 30km/h speed restriction in place.
